How to Stay Happy and Motivated During Competitive Exam Preparation
- By Dr. Sumita Giri | Life & Parenting Coach

Preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, NEET, or JEE can be a long and tough journey. Students often feel stressed, tired, and sometimes even hopeless. But here’s something I want every student and parent to know: You are not weak because you are struggling. You are strong because you are continuing despite the struggle.
This blog is based on a heartfelt video message to all students and their parents. Let’s explore how you can stay happy, positive, and motivated during your preparation phase.
1. Environment Matters: Make Your Space Study-Friendly
The place where you study affects how you feel. Imagine waking up in a room with messy bedsheets, clothes lying around, and slippers scattered. Will you feel like studying? Probably not. That’s why it’s important to clean and organize your space. Have a dedicated study corner with a table, clean water, and good lighting. A peaceful environment makes your mind calm, focused, and ready to learn.
Parents’ Tip: Even if you cannot teach your child, just being there and helping them maintain a calm and tidy space gives them strength.
2. Manage Your Sleep – Respect Your Brain
Many students study at night—and that’s okay! But sleep is not optional. You must get 6–8 hours of sleep in 24 hours. Whether it’s night or day, your brain needs rest. Good sleep helps your brain form better memory connections through something called neuroplasticity. It gives your brain time to heal, refresh, and become more focused.
So no, sleeping only 3–4 hours is not cool. It reduces your productivity.
Golden Rule: Sleep well = Study well.
3. The Power of Solitude – Don’t Broadcast, Just Work
Solitude is not loneliness. It means spending quiet time with your thoughts, ideas, and goals. When you tell others your plans too early, your brain feels as if the task is already done. This gives a fake sense of accomplishment and reduces motivation.
Instead, keep your plans private. Work silently. Let success make the noise.
This builds something very special inside you—called intrinsic motivation. You will no longer wait for praise. You will enjoy the process itself.
4. Scientific + Spiritual + Structured Methods = Real Success
Motivation is not magic. It’s a blend of:
- Scientific understanding (like sleep cycles, dopamine levels)
- Spiritual belief (faith in yourself and your journey)
- Structured habits (daily routines and self-discipline)
If you mix all three, you create a powerful routine that actually works.
Remember: Don’t just listen. Apply what you learn.
5. Ask Questions – It’s a Sign of Strength
One of my students, Hrithik, asked a very honest question:
“How do I stay happy while preparing for UPSC?”
That one question made this blog possible.
So to all students: Don’t feel shy. Ask your doubts. Ask your teachers. Ask your parents. We are here to help, not to judge.
6. Dear Parents: Be the Land, Let Your Child Rise
Maybe you’re not from an academic background. Maybe you’re too busy. Still, your presence matters. Just stand beside your child. Motivate them. Create a positive home environment. Even grandparents can play a big role! Their silent support is full of strength.
Believe this: You become the land, your child will reach the sky.
Final Thoughts
- Clean your environment = Clean your mind
- Sleep well = Think better
- Don’t show off your goals = Stay focused
- Don’t seek praise = Fall in love with the process
Motivation doesn’t last forever, but discipline, routines, and family support can keep it alive.
As a life coach and a mother, I have seen these principles work on my students and my own child. I am here to help you. Write to me, ask your questions, and let’s work together. Children, try these tips and tell me what worked. Parents, support me in this journey. Together, we can create strong, focused, and emotionally balanced young adults.
